Desde el boom del death metal a finales de los 80, Suecia se ha mantenido indiscutiblemente como uno de los países con más buenas bandas de metal del mundo. Ayudados por un sistema de alquiler de equipo y salas financiado por el Estado, los jóvenes lo tienen fácil para desarrollar sus proyectos musicales. Este factor, junto al de su tradición musical, provocan que la cantera sueca metalera tenga un nivel muy superior a la de la mayoría de países del mundo. Este es un hecho que constaté cuando vi por primera vez en vivo a DEATH CHAPEL. Fue en el marco de un concierto de grupos nóveles en una casa de la cultura de Gotemburgo, ciudad que, a pesar de estar bastante menos poblada que Sevilla, ha parido muchísimas más bandas insignes en el género. Y menciono Sevilla porque es la única otra ciudad grande en la que he vivido en mi vida, pero me apostaría lo que fuera a que ninguna localidad del sur de Europa es rival para una ciudad sueca de tamaño similar. Así es la vida, unas naciones son mejores en el fútbol y otras lo son en el metal.

 

Sin más preámbulo, les introduzco al nuevo EP de la joven banda gotemburguesa DEATH CHAPEL: Envy the Sun. Será publicado el 2 de febrero.

 

Al presionar play, lo primero con lo que nos encontramos es con el single Wander, ya disponible en plataformas digitales. Empieza con un riff que recuerda mucho a AMON AMARTH, para luego evocar a AT THE GATES. Es una pieza de death metal melódico de sonido ameno aunque de letras siniestras, ya que va sobre un asesino errante sediento de sangre.

A continuación viene Antisocial, uno de los temas que tocan al final de su set. Canción pegadiza y de aura más moderna que recuerda a ratos al AVATAR clásico. Por medio de unos viscerales guturales, se cuenta la historia de un incomprendido que acaba aislado de la sociedad.

La siguiente es Insomnia, track instrumental muy relajado para el que los músicos afirman haberse inspirado en The House of the Rising Sun. A mi juicio, el hecho de incluir una canción, que aunque tiene su toque metal, es fundamentalmente rock psicodélico, prueba que la banda tiene mucha libertad creativa.

 

Por último, tenemos a la canción que da nombre al EP, Envy the Sun. Aquí volvemos al melodeath. La guitarra toca un riff machacón tipo DEATHKLOK marcado por un bajo que aporta tensión al resultado. Amparados por el incesante fuego de cobertura de la batería, unos punteos de aire melancólico ponen la guinda sobre el pastel de este excelente trabajo.
